WRITTEN BY RAIMONDO CORTESE
DIRECTED BY MATTHEW CONNELL

about

St Kilda Tales was first presented by Ranters Theatre at The Malthouse in 2001 as part of the Centenary of Federation Festival. It was inspired by the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda, where many original company members lived. Brisbane Music Festival and Victorian Theatre Company now present the play in a 2025 context. Musicians and cast play together in an urban ritual of multi-faceted choreography, music and character study. Playwright Raimondo Cortese has reworked parts of the script for this new production.

This will be VTC Artistic Director Connell’s directorial debut, and second collaboration with Brisbane Music Festival, after Enoch Arden - a film/performance hybrid that debuted in 2021 to critical acclaim.
London-based composer Jack Bochow and Brisbane Music Festival Artistic Director Alex Raineri will play a newly commissioned original score live onstage with the cast.

This project is supported by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its arts funding and advisory body. This project is also supported through the Australian Cultural Fund, City of Port Phillip, the Palais Community Fund & Kawai Australia.

With thanks to Alexander Meagher and Angus Wilson for generously supporting musical instrument usage.

"If there was one play that should be recorded and put in a time capsule for future generations, it should be this one."

"This is an absolute powerhouse of a creative team, whose dedication to brilliance is evident with every choice."

brisbane music festival

Praised for its “diverse programming” (Limelight), the annual Brisbane Music Festival (BMF) curated and produced by Alex Raineri has swiftly established itself as a vibrant addition to the Australian arts scene. In 2025, the BMF celebrates its eighth year of eclectic approaches to programming, a cross-cultivation of musical offerings both old and new.

Despite its relatively youthful history the BMF has commissioned and presented the World Premiere performances of over 80 new works by Australian and International composers. Artistic Director Alex Raineri was awarded an APRA/AMCOS 'Luminary' Art Music Award for his commitment to Australian music through the BMF.

While the stylistic focal point of the festival is on new classical/concert music, previous major projects have included cross-art form collaborations featuring theatre, visual-arts, contemporary dance and cross-genre shows traversing classical, musical theatre, jazz, folk, pop and rock.

The BMF has featured some of Australia’s leading artists including; Ensemble Offspring, Ensemble Q, Sara Macliver, Orava Quartet, Natusko Yoshimoto, Karin Schaupp, Amy Lehpamer, Claire Edwardes, Lisa Moore, Paul Dean, and many others.
